Depending on your state, you may be eligible to apply for a hardship license, or what is also referred to as a hardship permit or a restricted learner's permit. Not all states offer hardship licenses for teen drivers; usually, these licenses are restricted to rural states.
In a nutshell, a hardship license is only available to teens who are 14 or 15 years old (the exact age varies by state), who, under normal circumstances, are too young to apply for a regular driver's license, and who qualify for hardship status.
The exact criteria for hardship status varies by state, but in general you must have one of the following reasons for applying:
- Need the driver's license to drive to and from school. There may be a mileage minimum attached to this requirement. The school can't be just around the block. It must, depending on state, be a minimum number of miles away from your home.
- Need the driver license to drive to and from work. Some states may require that the job entails a minimum number of hours. Wyoming, for example, mandates that applicants work a minimum of 10 hours per week.
- Need the hardship license to work for your parent's business (farming is common for this requirement).
- Need the license for long-term medical reasons. In most cases, routine medical visits do not qualify.
Hardship License Application
When applying, be prepared to provide proof. You must back up your reason for needing the license. You will have to provide job or school attendance verification, along with the regular hardship license application.
In most instances, the license application requires notarization.
Hardship License Restrictions for Teen Drivers
The hardship license does not give you free reign behind the wheel. Depending on your state, you will be held to some or all of the following driving restrictions:
- Valid only for pre-authorized locations (school or work).
- Passengers limited to family members only.
- A mileage limitation to each drive. Tennessee, for example, imposes a limitation of 25 miles per way.
- Valid only during daylight hours.
For information about the availability of hardship licenses in your state, check our section for teen drivers, refer to your state's driver's handbook, and contact your local DMV.
Have you or someone you know ever needed a hardship license?
Driver licence - urgent question
Sunday 20th March 2011
Just noticed my driver licence expires in 4 days and I'm off on holiday in 5 days. Can anything be done in such a short time?!
Sunday 20th March 2011
Go to the post office asap, they have a system where it can be sent securely to dvla - I've just done this myself. It still takes 3 weeks to come back, so technically you will be breaking the law however, you have to send your old licence back to the dvla to be updated so will thus be unable to produce if required (ie for a hire car).
Not much else that can be done really. You're at the mercy of Swansea I guess.

Is it your licence that expires or your photograph, there is not much that you can do at this late stage apart from send it off and hopefully it should be back for when you return from holiday.
If you need your licence for holiday ie to rent a car etc then you might be able to contact DVLA and ask them if they have a fast track system like they do for passports or if you can keep it until after your holiday.
Either way you will never know if you dont ask, good luck and dont forget to send off your £20.00 if its for a photograph renewal.

Little tip. If you go to the Post Office to update the photo, it costs £20 ish and you have to give in your licence. Alternatively, if you go to the post office to update the photo and have 'lost' your licence then it costs exactly the same.
I would advise you to go to the Post Office sans licence to update the photo- At least then you have a paper licence to use on holiday if you want to hire a car or something...

Yep I would also do this, the hire car companies may well not notice/care that it has expired.I would advise you to go to the Post Office sans licence to update the photo- At least then you have a paper licence to use on holiday if you want to hire a car or something...

Your entitlement to drive is unaffected. If you send off your licence tomorrow but retain proof of your entitlement (a copy)then i don't see a problem. Hire companies may get a bit awkward if that is what you are worried about. There is a DVLA number you can call to verify your entitlement 09061 393837. Bit pricy though!
Give the DVLA a call in the morning, you won't be on hold long before some extemely happy and helpful welsh person solves all your problems instantly (maybe).
edited to add if ringing for general advice get a number off their website, not the above

So if I head to the post office tomorrow morning, with my photo card. Get a new photo, not hand over my counter part and keep my fingers crossed that might work?
I assume they send it there and then to the DVLA and the best I can do is hope that it arrives in time. In the worst case gamble that they will allow me to have the car on the counterpart or let the wife drive?

It's utterly stupid that they've incorporated an 'expiry' date into it with the introduction of a photo. It doesn't need a picture, we already have passports for photo ID.
Remove the picture, abolish the expiry date. It's making work for the sole purpose of extracting yet more money from drivers every few years.

Passports expire in 10 years, the same as driving licences... and just because you drive doesn't mean you have a passport (and vice versa). It's understandible but it should be a nil-cost exercise rather than £20 + £4.50 from the PO to have it sent with any semblance of chance of it not being lost.Remove the picture, abolish the expiry date. So what will I need to take, seeing as I've lost my license? Passport, proof of address? The website only says this:What do I do if my licence is lost, stolen or destroyed?
If you have a D798 reminder, as part of the transaction you can let the Post Office® know that one or both parts of your licence (photocard and/or counterpart), have been lost, stolen or destroyed.

You should have got a reminder about 2 months ago so not much excuse to only just notice. Fill the form in and tick the lost licence bit and send it off 1st class. It may be back by the end of the week or the end of next month depending on luck but I wouldn't trust the post office to do anything except lose it.Sunday 20th March 2011

FWIW it's a common misconception but the paper counterpart to the photo licence is, on it's own, a worthless piece of paper. It is not a licence and doesn't even state the groups which you are entitled to drive.
Whilst you might get away with it in UK abroad you have no chance.

Dont you have 13 months on an expired/revoked licence before it is actually void?
Sunday 20th March 2011
Don't know where you got that from.
A revoked licence is void from the moment it is revoked.
In UK an expired licence will only get you a fine for failing to produce or renew.
